A dry throat, aching soreness in multiple body parts, and a killer headache. These were the first things you felt waking up, slowly rising to sit upright on an uncomfortable metal platform. Shoes hitting the concrete underneath as you looked around in a daze. What happened?
You got drunk as skunk is what happened. A celebration about something or other with some friends, and sooner or later you got drunk. Thankfully you didnât try to get behind a wheel- bad news is you terrorized a lot of people in your drunken mess and got the police involved and your bum thrown behind bars for the night. No vomit on the ground! Thankfully.
Standing up, you knocked on the jail bars, speaking up with a dry voice, âUhh, hello?â After a few seconds a police officer walked from behind the corner, a tired look on his face- ah, it seems like he had to deal with your drunk self for a majority of his shift before you passed out. At least heâll be getting off the clock soon?
âCould I be let out to go home?â
âYouâll need someone to pick you up. Canât have someone hungover trying to get back home.â
Unlocking the cell, he opened the door and directed you to a wall phone, black with buttons that had their paint pressed off.
They left you to give you some privacy as you dialed in the phone number of your significant other.
âThis is Von Lycaon, to whom am I speaking to?â
âHey honey!â
âOh! Hi dear, did you just wake? Why are you calling from a different number?â
âUhm⌠well I sorta got reallyy~y drunk and sorta scared a bunch of people and then the police cameâŚâ

âCould you pick me up from the Lumina Square police department?â
â... Iâll be there in five.â
Von Lycaon ended the call, turning to Corin, who had just spilled a drink and who he had been aiding in cleaning the mess up. âApologies but I must attend to something quickly. Please inform Miss Sebastiane that I will be out momentarily for personal matters.â Corin nodded, having quickly realized who he had been speaking to. âYes sir!â Before returning to drying the seat.
Stepping out of the building and into the sidewalk, Lycaon began his trip to pick you up. Entering his vehicle, letting it warm up from a night of cool air, before getting it on the road and to the police department. Music that he had been recommended by Miss Ellen playing in the car speakers- a hardcore metal band with a lot of guttural screaming and sharp electric guitar riffs. He likes it.
Pulling into the police departmentâs public parking, Lycaon parks his car into a free space and exits the vehicle, going to enter the building from the front door. Entering, he nods to the police officer on duty, knowing them due to his duty of turning in criminals he apprehended while serving his âMasterâs.
âOh! Lycaon!â Waving your hand through the bars of your cell, you excitedly called his name. He nodded towards you, âIâm here to pick them up.â The officer nodded, standing up and unholstering their keys from their belt before unlocking your cell door and letting you out. âYouâll be off with a warning this time.â âThank you sir!â You replied with a grateful nod before turning to Lycaon. âLetâs go!â
Leaving the police department with him, the moment he closed the door behind them he turned to you. A disappointed dad face written all over.
âNext time let me accompany you when you go drinking. I have more than enough vacation days saved up.â
âYes sirâŚâ
He drove you to your shared apartment, taking care to not dizzy you while driving. Preparing a simple chicken noodle soup and filling a cup with water, he fed you and aided as you recovered from your hangover.
You didnât even need to call her, seeing as how she was right around the corner- having just clocked out from her graveyard shift and being notified of your situation. It was quite a surprise to turn the corner and see Zhu Yuan leaning on the wall with a mildly disappointed look.
âReally?â
âIt was a drink at first⌠but then it sorta became two and before I knew it IâŚâ
âItâs okay. But please donât make it a habit. Now, letâs get you home, you must be really hungover.â
âYeahâŚâ
She nodded, taking your hand before acknowledging the other police officer with a grateful- and apologetic, smile. Aiding you in walking by linking your arms together, she took you to the car and helped settle you in. Driving carefully, she made sure not to do anything to set off your hangover- she did not want to vomit all over the insides of her car.
Finally the two of you arrived at your shared abode, with her helping you in before setting you down onto the couch. Entering the kitchen momentarily before returning, she handed you a bottle of coconut water, with you quickly uncapping it and chugging it. Finishing with a satisfied, âAhh~!â, when the room stopped feeling like it was spinning.
âWhat would you like for takeout?â
âBurgers!â
âSounds good.â
âAnd pizza!â
âHuh?â
âAnd Chinese food!â
âWhuh- too much!â
âAnd a burrito!â

Off Grid Living
My Pleasure!
First, while there are several different definitions, when I say "off grid", I generally mean not hooked up to utilities. Not being hooked up to utilities usually also involves living somewhere smaller and simpler- like a tiny house, wall tent, yurt, or cabin.
There is a thriving community of people who have decided, for whatever reason, to not hook up to utilities. Some reasons someone might decide to live off grid include:
Environmental reasons- you can't use power, water, or gas (or at least you have to use a LOT less) if you don't have a steady supply coming through your walls.
Prepping reasons- the term is "collapse now and avoid the rush", essentially, if you see the world around you going to heck, going off grid teaches you a lot of skills you may need (and teaches them on your own time) if utilities do go out or become unreliable in the future.
Economic reasons- Since you don't have power, water, and gas coming through your walls, you can be very deliberate about how you use these things, which generally means using a LOT less. And you pay as you use a resource instead of having to pay every month, so can easily reduce your resource use or go without if you need to.
Simplicity reasons- a lot of utilities means a lot of upkeep, payments, maintenance, and brainpower. Living in a way where you don't need utilities greatly reduces stress (at least as I have experienced it).
Privacy reasons- many people who live off grid live in a relatively rural area or live in an itinerant way, and don't want to deal with people much.
Incidental- utilities don't go where they live.
For my wife and I, it was a combination of all of the above.
The rest of this post is about how we meet our needs while living off grid.
Housing:
For us housing is a wall tent on an insulated wooden platform I built myself. It was my first time building something by myself that wasn't a fence, and I didn't do a particularly great job. But it's holding us up.
The wall tent is a 14x16 White Duck brand canvas tent. It gives us about 224sqft of floor space in one room. This is a stock image of the tent:
Vehicles:
We chose our vehicles to meet our lifestyle. We own a Prius (which is essentially a generator on wheels) and an F-250 (which is an all-purpose engine). Being a hybrid, the Prius can charge our home batteries without having to start the engine, and will re-charge it's own battery as it's idling, braking, or going down hills. The F-250 is a diesel and will be our general farm vehicle, tractor, as well as being able to haul large loads of firewood and manure.
Power:
We like electric light, and we like to charge our phones and computers. Other than that, though, we've realized it's not that hard to go without higher-power-consuming devices like water heaters, refrigerators, or stoves.
We have a Ryobi inverter, which makes it possible to run a few strands of twinkle lights and charge devices off of a drill battery. We have 4, 6-amp-hour batteries, which is about enough power to run our lights for about 8hours while charging our phones a few times over. These 4 batteries usually last us about 2-3 days. We then either charge them at a friend's house or off the Prius battery.
Heat and Cooking:
We live in Ohio, and it's winter, so we have a wood stove in our tent. It's a Nectre Bun Baker and if I had to do it over again, I'd get something with a bigger fire box.
But anyway, it's compact and has an oven and cooking surface, so the fire takes care of our heating and cooking needs. It takes about an hour to go from the inside of the tent being the same temperature as outside to warm enough to shower in front of.
It does tend to be chillier in here than the average house. Right now it's in the 40's outside and I don't even have the fire going. We got used to being a little colder very quickly and now other people's houses feel WAY too hot for comfort.
We currently just heat water on the wood stove if we want it warm for bathing or cleaning. Soon we are hoping to get a stock pot with a spigot to be a more permanent solution to our hot water needs. We'll still need to fill it as we empty it, but it will be ready when we are!
Water:
Speaking of water, we have 2 five-gallon jugs that we refill at a friend's house. We also have a small utility sink in the tent. We have a pump top that fits on the top of one of the jugs that sits on a table next to the sink. When we want water, we push the pump top and water "runs" out of a little spout so we can easily access water for drinking, dishes, cooking, laundry, bathing, and cleaning.
The sink's drain runs into a 5-gallon bucket that we empty by hand.
It's amazing how incredibly little water we use compared to how much we used before we moved here. One 5-gallon jug lasts us about 2 days (though I do use some water at work that doesn't factor in).
Hygiene:
Since we don't have a shower in the tent, we generally just get 3-4 cups of water that we heat on the stove. We then stand in a plastic basin and wash our hair, pits, crotch, butt, and feet. The water then goes to the grey water bucket. I do this monday-friday because I have a professional job, but my wife does it about every 3-4 days. Honestly I am so much less dry and itchy this time of year and I don't have to use any kind of conditioner or moisturizer. Teh problem is getting up early enough to get it warm enough in the tent that washing is comfortable.
I shave in a few tablespoons of water, but I have a beard, so I don't have much to shave.
Both of us wear deodorant, too, which helps.
Waste:
For poop and pee we use a composing toilet. The toilet diverts our urine into a 5-gallon bucket so we can use it for fertilizer. Our poop falls into another 5-gallon bucket that we cover with sawdust after every go. When that is full we take it to a compost pile we will not use for 3 years, when our pathogens are good and dead and the poop is fully composted into humanure.
For trash, if it's paper or cardboard we burn it as kindling for our fire. If it's a jar we generally use it for storage (we break a lot of these...), and if it's something we can't use (like plastic film) we either put it with a friend's trash or take it to a landfill directly.
Internet:
We have phones, and use them as hotspots when we need to post things to pay bills or post things to tumblr or whatnot.

It has a vehicle fuel equivalent of 143 mpg. This option can tow 350kg (unbraked) and 350kg (braked). A robust 460L of cargo volume is available with the seats up and 1600L with the seats down! At 4380mm in length, this sits just above the Mokka with its 4,151mm.Â

BERLIN, April 15 (Reuters) - Tesla (TSLA.O), opens new tab is laying off more than 10% of its global workforce, an internal memo seen by Reuters on Monday shows, as it grapples with falling sales and an intensifying price war for electric vehicles (EVs).
"About every five years, we need to reorganize and streamline the company for the next phase of growth," CEO Elon Musk commented in a post on X. Two senior leaders, battery development chief Drew Baglino and vice president for public policy Rohan Patel, also announced their departures, drawing posts of thanks from Musk although some investors were concerned.
Musk last announced a round of job cuts in 2022, after telling executives he had a "super bad feeling" about the economy. Still, Tesla headcount has risen from around 100,000 in late 2021 to over 140,000 in late 2023, according to filings with U.S. regulators.
Baglino was a Tesla veteran and one of four members, along with Musk, of the leadership team listed on the company's investor relations website.
Scott Acheychek, CEO of Rex Shares - which manages ETFs with high exposure to Tesla stock - described the headcount reductions as strategic, but Michael Ashley Schulman, chief investment officer at Running Point Capital Advisors, deemed the departures of the senior executives as "the larger negative signal today" that Tesla's growth was in trouble.
Less than a year ago, Tesla's chief financial officer, Zach Kirkhorn, left the company, fueling concerns about succession planning.
Tesla shares closed 5.6% lower at $161.48 on Monday. Shares of EV makers Rivian Automotive (RIVN.O), opens new tab, Lucid Group (LCID.O), opens new tab and VinFast Auto also dropped between 2.4% and 9.4%.
"As we prepare the company for our next phase of growth, it is extremely important to look at every aspect of the company for cost reductions and increasing productivity," Musk said in the memo sent to all staff.

MASS MARKET
The layoffs follow an exclusive Reuters report on April 5 that Tesla had cancelled a long-promised inexpensive car, expected to cost $25,000, that investors have been counting on to drive mass-market growth. Musk had said the car, known as the Model 2, would start production in late 2025.
Shortly after the story published, Musk posted "Reuters is lying" on his social media site X, without detailing any inaccuracies. He has not commented on the car since, leaving investors and analysts to speculate on its future.
Tech publication Electrek, which first reported, opens new tab the latest job cuts, said on Monday that the inexpensive car project had been defunded and that many people working on it had been laid off.
Reuters also reported on April 5 that Tesla would shift its focus to self-driving robotaxis built on the same small-car platform. Musk posted on X that evening: "Tesla Robotaxi unveil on 8/8," with no further details.
Tesla could be years away from releasing a fully autonomous vehicle with regulatory approval, according to experts in self-driving cars and regulation.

A newly elected works council of labour representatives at Tesla's German plant was not informed or consulted ahead of the announcement to staff, said Dirk Schulze, head of the IG Metall union in the region.
"It is the legal obligation of management not only to inform the works council but to consult with it on how jobs can be secured," Schulze said.
Analysts from Gartner and Hargreaves Lansdown said the cuts were a sign of cost pressures as the carmaker invests in new models and artificial intelligence.

California alone, according to the report, saw an average of $10 million a month stolen in the first three months of this year. Japanâs Largest Cargo Shipping Port Hit by Ransomware
The Japanese port of Nagoyaâthe countryâs biggest cargo port. handling roughly 10 percent of its total shippingâon Tuesday revealed that it had been the victim of a ransomware attack. The attack, apparently carried out by the prolific Russia-linked ransomware group LockBit, prevented companies like Toyota from loading and unloading manufacturing components from ships and led to a traffic jam of truck drivers picking up and offloading containers at the port.
